Frostings are sweet often creamy glazes made from sugar with an added liquid such as water or milk, that is often enriched with ingredients such as butter, egg whites or vanilla flavorings and is used to cover or decorate baked goods, such as cakes or cookies. Pastry bags are then used to apply the frosting to cakes, pies, muffins or other baked goods. A high-quality reusable pastry bag is often made from tightly woven nylon, polyester, rubber or waterproofed cotton. Medium quality bags are similar, except they are not so tightly woven and may let some contents seep through the weave or the seams. After use, a reusable bag is washed by hand and hung open to dry. A high-quality bag may last for many years.

Cherry Strudel

Make a dough of two cups of flour, a pinch of salt and a little lukewarm water; do not make it too stiff, but smooth. Slap the dough back and forth. Do this repeatedly for about fifteen minutes. Now put the dough in a warm, covered bowl and set it in a warm, place for half an hour. In the meantime stem and pit two quarts of sour cherries. Grate into them some stale bread (about a plateful); also the peel of half a lemon, and mix. Add one cup of sugar, some ground cinnamon and about four ounces of pounded sweet almonds, mix all thoroughly. Roll out the dough as thin as possible, lay aside the rolling-pin and pull, or rather stretch the dough as thin as tissue paper. In doing this you will have to walk all around the table, for when well stretched it will cover more than the size of an ordinary table. Pull off all of the thick edge, for it must be very thin to be good (save the pieces for another strudel). Pour a little melted goose-oil or butter over this, and sprinkle the bread, sugar, almonds, cherries, etc., over it; roll the strudel together into a long roll. Have ready a long baking-pan well greased with either butter or goose-fat; fold the strudel into the shape of a pretzel. Butter or grease top also and bake a light brown; baste often while baking. Eat warm.

Cherry Licorice: A Sweet Memory

Being a fan of licorice myself, I was asked by a friend to try the best licorice that she had ever had. The flavor was cherry licorice and she said that it tasted like the sweetest cherry pie that she had ever had. Not being a fan of cherry pie or anything cherry for that matter, I was reluctant to try it. But to my delight, it was as good, if not better than what my friend had described.

To me, the best licorice needs to be chewy and so full of flavor that you can't help but eat piece after piece. What attracted me to the cherry was the deep flavor that it had along with the poppy red color. It wasn't only candy for the mouth, it was candy for the eyes as well. The chewiness was addicting and when my friend and I had eaten the whole bag, we were left wanting more.

Another aspect of this cherry licorice that I loved was its smell. The cherry aroma hits your nose well before the candy hits your taste buds. Right when the bag was opened, a deep, sweet, summery smell wafted into my nose and made me rethink my opposition against all things cherry . I started thinking about the cherry tree we had in our backyard when I was a kid. The cool breeze would make the leaves dance and the cherries would sway right along. I would lie beneath that tree in its refreshing shade and daydream about all the things a little girl daydreams about.

It's amazing where flavors and scents can lead you. But this licorice was so good that every time I have one, I am taken right back to that same spot under the cherry tree on that warm summer day. Now that is what I call a good piece of candy.
